Prevention is the key to flea control both inside and outside. On the inside it is very inexpensive and safe to use an insect growth regulator that prevents flea eggs and larvae from becoming adults. The best IGR(insect growth regulator) on the market is IG Regulator. One ounce of Flea Fix (I.G. regulator) makes one gallon, is safe to spray on all carpets and furniture and lasts up to 6 months. Because it is an insect hormone it has no effect on other animals such as mammals, reptiles or birds.
Two sprayings a year with IG Regulator will prevent a flea infestation from ever starting. Click here to see the life cycle of the common flea.
If you already have an infestation of fleas than you must use an adulticide to kill adult fleas in the house, in the yard and on the pet. Precor 2000 Plus is a hand held fogger that contains both an adult flea killer and an IGR. Precor 2000 Plus is an excellent product to eliminate the fleas from a house. It is very safe and easy to use. One can will cover about 1500 sq. ft.
If you want to use a concentrate then we recommend Suspend. This a very safe and effective synthetic pyrethroid that is labeled for complete coverage of the carpet.
A thorough cleaning of the house is your first order of business. This is a very important measure and should not be taken lightly. Start by taking all pet bedding and washing it in hot water or destroying it. Next, vacuum all carpeting and mop all wood or tile floors. It is particularly important to clean well in areas where pets sleep or rest, under furniture, in cracks and crevices and along walls. Don't forget closets too. And remember, you can't always see fleas--particularly eggs and larvae--so be thorough.
All pets should be removed from the house and defleaed with one of our products or by your veterinarian. Fish tanks should be unplugged and covered with a wet towel.
Treat all infested areas using a good adulticide. Turn off the air conditioning and do not return for four hours. Any adulticide should kill the adult fleas for about 7 days. Re-treatments will probably be needed to kill the adults as they emerge from the cocoon. To prevent future infestations apply Flea Fix inside twice a year, outside 3 times a year.
Apply IG Regulator on April Fool's Day, the 4th of July and Halloween for continuous flea protection, both inside and outside.
FLEAS---THE HARD FACTS
AFTER A FLEA TREATMENT, EXPECT THE FOLLOWING
Most adult fleas will die from the first treatment, but the problem is far from being over.
Within a few days, new fleas will appear. This is due to hatching pupae. Since NO spray can kill pupae, you must wait until all the pupae hatch out. Expect to see fleas between 2 & 4 weeks after the initial treatment. This is normal and depends strictly on how many pupae you have in your home.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS?
Vacuum daily. This causes the pupae to hatch out faster.
